1. Dry powder inhalers (DPI) are less effective if you exhale into them before inhaling the medication.

2. To make sure you get the medicine from a metered dose inhaler (MDI also known as “Puffer”) deep into your lungs, you should take a slow deep breath and then hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds.

3. A DPI should be shaken before using.

4. You can tell how much medication is left in the MDI by floating the canister in a bowl of water.

5. A nebulizer is as effective for the patient as an MDI or DPI.

6. A spacer or holding chamber help you coordinate the release of the medicine from the MDI by holding the medication in a chamber until you are ready to breathe in.

7. In order to take a DPI correctly you must take a fast, deep breath and hold it for 5 to 10 seconds.

8. When using a nebulizer you should continue with the treatment until all the mist is gone.

9. If your MDI is new or you have not used it in 12 hours, you should "prime" (spray one dose into the air) the MDI to make sure you get the full dose of medicine.

10.You can use a spacer or holding chamber with your DPI.
