What is Cancer?

Lung cancer is a frightening and confusing diagnosis, yet it is important to take the time to learn about lungs and lung cancer. We hope that this information will help you to make informed decisions about your treatment and health care choices

We have many different cells in our body. If you were to look through the microscope at each organ cell, you will find that it is unique to that particular organ. For example, lung cells look different from the cells of the colon, brain, liver, and breast.

Normally cells grow, divide, and produce new cell that keep us healthy, and then they die in a predictable way.  Cancer occurs when the cells grow out of control and do not die. These cells form a mass of tissue that is called a tumor. These tumors can be either benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancer).
