New Allergy Vaccine in the Works

A one-size-fits-all allergy shot may be on the way. Swiss researchers who tested the vaccine in 63 patients with asthma found it cut down on symptoms by a third. The shot appears to protect against eczema, hay fever, and even peanut allergies.

Lack of Sunshine Vitamin Linked to Severe Asthma Attacks

Harvard researchers who followed more than 1,000 kids with asthma found those with low levels of vitamin D had a 50% greater chance of having a severe asthma attack.

Shellfish Allergies May Wane Over Time

Can you outgrow allergies to shellfish? Maybe, report Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers. They find adults who are allergic to shrimp have a less intense immune system reaction than children with the same allergy. On average, shrimp antibodies were four times higher in kids.

Some People May Never "Outgrow" Asthma

People with peanut allergies who appear to outgrow their asthma might want to hang on to the inhaler. British researchers find even kids who seemed asthma-free still had higher than normal levels of nitric oxide in their exhaled breath, indicating ongoing inflammation in the airways.

Ethnic Differences Seen in Asthma Care

Black and Hispanic children have worse asthma outcomes than white children, even when they have the same access to care, report U.S. investigators. The study was based on nearly 823,000 kids enrolled in a U.S. Department of Defense health maintenance organization-type of program.

Patients Adhere to Meds Better When Docs Keep Close Eye on Prescriptions

Detroit researchers find asthma patients are more likely to take their medications as prescribed when their doctors carefully monitor their medication use, such as keeping up with prescription refills via prescription tracking software.

Exercise Benefits Adults with Asthma

Regular exercise can help adults with asthma gain better control of the condition and also improve their quality of life. That's the take home message from Canadian researchers who compared 18 patients who exercised three times a week with 18 others who followed their normal lifestyle habits.

New Hope for Peanut Allergy Sufferers

German investigators are making some progress on an oral immunotherapy aimed at protecting children with peanut allergies from accidental ingestion. The technique was effective in 12 out of 14 children who completed the study, but the researchers caution much more work remains before the approach could be put into widespread use.

Lung Tests Should Be Adjusted for Mixed Ancestry

Genetic ancestry should be taken into greater account when assessing lung function tests, report U.S. researchers. They find people of mixed races often don't fit well with adjustments made for specific races.

Freeway Pollution Aggravates Asthma

Ultra-fine particles in air pollution found along a Los Angeles freeway increased allergic inflammation deep in the lungs, according to a California study. The researchers say exposure to these particles can worsen asthma.

People with Asthma Should Receive a Flu Vaccination Every Year

The flu is caused by the influenza virus, which infects the respiratory tract (nose, throat, lungs). People with asthma are more likely to have serious health problems from getting the flu, yet most people with asthma don't receive a flu shot every year. Be sure you get your flu shot this year.
